Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My fourth graders' eyes lit up when we visited the school library's new "collaboration corner" with its high-top tables and chairs. "Mrs. Blatz, why can't our classroom feel like this?" they asked. That question stuck with me. I'm requesting high-top chairs to start transforming our classroom into a space that matches my students' growing independence and creativity.

How These High-Top Chairs Will Make a Real Difference: Right now, my students hunch over traditional tables that force them into a one-size-fits-all posture.

First, the elevated seating naturally improves posture and alertness. When my students sit higher, their spines align better, and they're positioned at eye level with our whiteboard. Just last week, Second, the height creates a "café-style" atmosphere that encourages natural collaboration. High-top seating will make group work flow more naturally, just like adults collaborating at a coffee shop. Third, these chairs give fidgety students a healthy outlet for movement. The footrests provide a perfect place to swing feet without disturbing others – something my energetic learners desperately need.

My Goals for This Project: Transform our classroom into a more mature learning environment that respects my students' development Increase student engagement by creating a space that feels special and different Improve collaboration by making it easier for students to work together Boost confidence by providing an environment that treats students more like young adults

What Makes My Students Special: My fourth graders are at a unique stage – they're caught between childhood and early adolescence, craving independence while still needing guidance. They're the kids who started a peer tutoring program during lunch because they wanted to help struggling classmates. They're the ones who designed their own classroom job system because they wanted more responsibility. These students show their special nature every day.
