My Students

I am teaching 150 inner-city 6th graders ELA this year. We are a gifted and talented middle school in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Our students come from all 5 boroughs to join our school community. They vary in academic ability and include students with IEPs in the ICT setting.

My Project

As a first year ELA teacher, creating an inclusive classroom library is of utmost importance to me. My students come from various backgrounds and I want them all to feel represented in my classroom both as individuals and in the resources I have available to them. Independent reading is encouraged daily in my school, with students reading twice a day in homeroom. They also rely on these books for company on their commutes to our school, which are usually lengthy as our school is not a zoned one. I want my library to be a place they look forward to exploring, and that makes them excited to read a new book.
