Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How many times do you read everyday? You read street signs to find out where you are, you read newspapers to learn about current events, you fill out job applications, and the list goes on. Now imagine not being able to read. That is a challenge that many of my special needs students face everyday.

My students attend a special education class in a Southern California school.

They have multiple learning disabilities that make it harder for them to learn in a conventional way. Our classroom consists of 20 students ranging from 3rd to 6th grade. All but two of my students are English language learners. Our school is a low income Title 1 school where all students qualify for free lunch. The lack of resources further hinders my students learning. Most of my students' parents work two jobs to make ends meet and seldom have time to take their kids to the library to find books of interest. Despite the obstacles in front of them, my students come in everyday with joyful attitudes and loving hearts.

My Project

Being a new teacher, I have some old books that I found in empty classrooms and a couple of books that I have bought on my own to help build my own library and encourage my struggling readers to read. Some of them have lost hope that they can learn to read and refuse to pick up books. Would you keep trying something that you were constantly unsuccessful at? It is my hope that with new interactive reading technology my students will rediscover reading. With the Nook Color e-Reader my students will be more inclined to try and read a book that they otherwise wouldn't pick up because now it is presented in a novel way. My students will be able to engage in reading fiction stories and be able to access non-fiction magazines like National Geographic for Kids, Time for Kids, and other such publications. Students will also be able to use the Nook for pair readings with other students which will increase their word knowledge and comprehension skills.

I ask you to please donate to our class project.

My students are reading below grade level and need a lot of motivation to pick up a book. If they have a Nook, they will view reading like a fun interactive experience and not a chore. I want my students to be able to read to learn and read for fun before they leave my classroom for middle school and high school. The sole ability to read will open up doors for my students in school and beyond it. Thank you!
