My Students

I teach 9th and 12th grade English in a college preparatory magnet in a low socioeconomic area in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. Almost all of our students quality for free breakfast and lunch and many have limited access to resources, which are made even less accessible during this period of distance learning while our schools are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, many of our students are juggling schoolwork with other responsibilities such as helping to take care of siblings and family members and work to help support their families.

Despite the obstacles that our students face, they remain eager to come to class and learn.

They are inquisitive, thoughtful, and strive to be critical, independent thinkers who want to have a prominent voice in today's world. They are hungry to learn and to be challenged by a curriculum that they feel is both valuable and relevant. Our students are from very diverse backgrounds, and have joined our magnet because they hope to continue their education by attending college after they graduate.

My Project

As a teacher of 9th graders who are doing their best to adjust to a new school in an online setting, and a teacher of seniors who are striving to prepare themselves for college and beyond while missing out on all of the social rewards of their final year in high school, I want to provide my students with the most engaging, supportive, and interactive online learning experience possible. But, after almost a year of teaching from home, my old and overworked computer has proven inadequate to support students in this process. It is unable to keep live class sessions on Zoom running smoothly with any other programs open simultaneously, and the sound regularly cuts in and out so that students have trouble hearing me. This has resulted in regular interruptions to our class sessions, and has limited the extent to which I am able to use technological tools and resources to enhance student learning.

I am requesting a MacBook Pro computer to ensure that I can provide students with the best online learning experience possible.

With this new device, I will be able to use technological tools during class time to keep students engaged and learning effectively, I will be able to create digital media and resources to upload to our school's learning management system to support students' asynchronous learning, and I will be able to provide a high quality video and sound experience so that students feel like they are in a classroom together. This device will also allow me to maintain my communication with parents and students more efficiently. These are technological supports that will serve my students throughout distance learning and beyond, and for many more years to come.
