Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did your family immigrate to the US from another country? Imagine going to another country where you don't speak the language and walking in to your classroom. You don't understand what is going on. It's scary. You need a comfortable, visually organized place to learn.

All of my students are English Language Learners.

Some have been in this country only a matter of weeks, others a year or so. Many of them come from families where the parents don't speak English either, so they get little support from home. In some cases, a parent may be illiterate in his or her own native language. And these parents do not know how to advocate for their children. Half my class does not know the English alphabet. So the children have a challenge succeeding in school. Our school is an inner city public school, the population does not have a lot of money.

My Project

Classroom materials and techniques that really help English Language learners revolve around visuals. The color coded caddies help they know what is for them to use for a particular subject. The pocket charts are different colors so they know where to look for Math vocabulary versus sight words. The pads and the clip art will help me create great charts with pictures for students to reference on their own.. The timer is for our alphabet/phonics lessons where we drill the alphabet in a series of activities that must be timed. And lastly, the classroom management signs will help this already great class, completely understand my verbal directions with a visual cue.

Every year for years, I have watched the English Language Learners suffer from lack of support and resources.

It is exceptionally hard for a teacher to teach her grade level class, ready the students for standardized tests, yet still help an English Language learner who is just learning the alphabet. These donations will help this specially created class of all English Language Learners progress substantially in language acquisition, which is the their most important goal.
