My Project

Help me create a thinking classroom! Thinking is a necessary precursor to learning, and if students are not thinking, they are not learning. Based on the research done by Peter Liljedahl (Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics), there are several ways teachers can create an optimal space where students can think and learn. Liljedahl says, "much of how classrooms look and much of what happens in them today is guided by institutional norms -- norms that have not changed since the inception of an industrial-age model of public education."

A thinking classroom is a classroom where students think individually and collectively.

Unfortunately, classrooms are often structured/arranged to have the teacher in the front of the classroom "teaching". However, students are often "studenting" not necessarily thinking and learning.

I want to build a thinking classroom where the structure/set up of the classroom helps foster student autonomy, engagement and thinking. I want to increase the number of students thinking and the number of minutes during which students are thinking in my classroom.

The vertical whiteboards will foster more interaction between groups, allow students to share their math thinking more visibly, and as a result allow for knowledge to move easily from student to student and group to group. Rather than being the center/source of knowledge in the room, I will be instead mobilizing the knowledge already existing in the room. Please help me break down the barriers around student thinking and mobilize the knowledge in the classroom for my students this year!
