My Students

Developmentally 2nd grade is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals that I get the pleasure of teaching! This group loves to write, learn new math strategies, and boogie to a fun tune to get their wiggles out every so often.

In this class, we are a whole.

We have built a community around each other’s strengths and shared experiences.

We are part of a larger whole that celebrates inclusion and individuality throughout each grade level, with whole school celebrations each month. I am one of five 2nd grade classrooms in a Title I 2nd-6th-grade school. The work we do in this classroom is academically invigorating as we build on our community as a whole.

My Project

On a daily basis my students remind me how resilient children are. I witness the social barriers 2020 have inflected on us on a daily basis. My 2nd grade students are at the age where they need interactions with each other for emotional and social growth. We spend our day in seats, facing forward, many feet apart from one another while not being allowed to share materials. This means no playing games, encouraging with high fives or getting in small groups to learn. Yet these amazing kiddos have found a way to engage and encourage one another while we spend our days confined to one room.

Giving my room a fresh new look and adding some sunshine to the work space are they are required to be all day will help make their space feel comfortable and safe.

When children feel comfortable and safe they are in the zone for learning to begin!
