Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a first-year elementary school counselor at a Title I campus, I am creating a safe haven where all students feel welcome and to enhance social-emotional learning among our eco-disadvantaged students. Our diverse student body, comprising 60% Hispanic and 38% African American students, will benefit significantly from the resources we plan to provide, including mindfulness journals, calming kits, and interactive emotion cards.

With these resources, I aim to create a welcoming and supportive environment in my office where students can feel safe and decompress when overwhelmed.

By ensuring students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings, I hope they will gain greater confidence and succeed in their classrooms throughout the school year.

These resources will support the development of gross motor skills for younger students, while Sensory Playtivity Squishy Sensory Discs and Calm Strips will enhance attention, focus, and mood management. The Emotional Toolbox, Feelings Chart, and Social Emotional Learning Toys will provide valuable practice in social skills such as turn-taking, politeness, and sportsmanship, and will also help students navigate real-world challenges they may encounter as adults. These tools are particularly beneficial for students with ADHD, autism, and anger issues, offering brain stimulation, improved focus, and better sensory processing while reducing stress and anxiety.

My students are incredibly resilient and eager to learn despite the challenges they face. Their diverse backgrounds bring a rich cultural perspective to the classroom, and by supporting their social-emotional development, we hope to empower them to achieve their full potential and thrive both academically and personally.
