Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a Title I middle school in which the majority of our students live in poverty. Many students are bilingual and come from immigrant families, so they are learning the skills required to be literate in a global society.

My students are curious about the world, and they deserve the time to read texts that will serve as mirrors of their own experiences and windows to the experiences of others.

This year, my school's English Language Arts department has committed to building students' reading habits and creating a stronger culture of reading. Any and all support is thoroughly appreciated!

My Project

This project will help me develop a stronger reading environment in my classroom in the form of both books and flexible seating opportunities. The books will be a welcome addition to our classroom library. The titles I have selected contain high interest texts at a variety of reading levels and in different genres.

Our reading nook will serve as a comfortable, safe space where students can get in the right mindset to read.

They will be able to sit on the couch during independent reading time, or when they need space to cool down. This will help teach them how to seek out spaces where they can be productive, and build strong habits moving into high school, college, and adulthood.
