Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 3rd graders are eager to share their experiences with others. My goal is to increase their writing quality and stamina. Writer's Notebooks will allow them to have a special place to write down their stories.

My school is located in the Bronx.

It is mainly compromised of African American, African, and Latino students. We also have students who are new to this country. Our school is located in an area where many students live in poverty and cannot afford to buy school supplies. We try our best to create a safe, risk-free and healthy learning environment for our students. We also like to celebrate diversity and promote respect for all throughout our school. My class this year is an eclectic mix of students. I have students who are English Language Learners, students who have special needs, students who live in shelters and students who have recently arrived to this country. My students are eager to learn and excited for this upcoming school year. They are also promising young writers who need the right materials and resources to help them reach third grade standards and succeed academically.

My Project

My students have just started third grade and have so many summer stories to share. In my class, I would like to implement Writer's Notebooks, in which the students will have a special place to jot down their ideas and turn them into stories. They will decorate the outside of their Writer's Notebooks with pictures and words that are special to them. On the inside of the notebook, they will be able to do all of their writing. This year we will focus on three genres of writing: Narrative, Opinion and Informational. In years past, we used loose leaf paper to do our writing but the students would either lose their work or their papers would get destroyed and rip. With these notebooks they will be able to keep all of their writing in a safe and accessible place. I plan to keep a caddy of pencils and a pencil sharpener in our writing center so that students will have all of their materials in one place when it is time to start writing for the day.

The notebooks, pencils and pencil sharpener will help tremendously with teaching my students become better writers this year.

The students will be able to have their own personal notebooks to share their world and experiences through writing. I am excited to read all their stories and help them with their writing skills. Who knows? Maybe one of these students will fall in love with writing and become the next Zora Neale Hurston, Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Paulo Coelho!
