Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class consists of 33 first grade students, 7 of who are exceptional education students. They have learning disabilities, speech and language delays, and fine motor impairments. Most of my students struggle with reading and reading comprehension. I try to infuse these skills into all subjects within my class. I would like to create a warm and inviting reading center within my class where the students can feel comfortable and relaxed to engage in reading activities with peers.

Most of my students come from financially disadvantaged homes where technology is not always available.

I only have 4 classroom computers which my students love using, however they are over 10 years old and extremely slow. My students love music, drawing, watching videos, and creating things with hands-on manipulative.

My Project

The students will be able to use the iPad to access reading and reading comprehension apps, as well as educational videos and activities. I’d like to incorporate reading throughout the curriculum and in all subjects. I have signed up for many different online resources where students can read, watch videos, and learn hands-on activities to perform within small, cooperative groups within the class. The students will be able to work in a small group or individually on the iPad in a safe, comfortable reading nook sitting on the couch, the ottomans, or the mats to access programs that are required by the district. They will also engage in intervention programs that will give them remediation for skills they are lacking or take longer to master.
