My Students

Southern California depends on water delivered from far away locations. It rarely rains here. We care about the environment at our school, so as part of Disney Planet Challenge, my fifth grade students want to learn about sustainable gardening - and teach our school about it too!

I teach an amazing group of fifth grade students at an elementary school in southern California.

We take pride in incorporating the arts and technology with our academic studies. We are a Title I school, which means that over 40% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our classroom is filled with many different types of students - English Language learners, an autistic student, students struggling with their academic subjects, and GATE students. What they all have in common is a love of learning. Especially learning that is hands-on!

My Project

My class is learning how to protect our watersheds - everything that flows into our rivers, streams, and oceans. We are a school that loves to recycle. What we are not yet aware of is sustainable gardening. I want to set up a sustainable garden, and to teach my class and all of the students and parents at our school how important it is to reduce our consumption of water in our gardens. Water is a precious resource, especially in our sunny location in Southern California. With the help of Disney Planet Challenge, my students will transform an area in our school playground, and create a beautiful sustainable garden. We will have California native plants, edible plants, and an irrigation system too.

What better way to teach students how to reduce our water consumption at home than by demonstrating at school how easy and beautiful landscaping can be when it is filled with drought tolerant plants.

With your help, our school will be a trendsetter, showing the way to reduce water usage, and still have a beautiful garden filled with native, drought tolerant plants.
