See what Mrs. Appleton is requestingMy students need a listening center complete with CD player, 3 CDs of the novels we are reading in class this year, and 6 headphones to listen individually or in a group setting. They also need 4 beanbags in our reading center to give them a warm and inviting place to sit as they read and listen to books when we rotate groups during reading time.

Do you want to inspire 5th-grade students to read? Do you want to give them a place where they can go and explore books and develop a love for reading? That's my goal as an inner-city Reading teacher and I'm sincerely hoping you share that dream too so we can work together to make this dream a reality for my students!
I wish you could look into the eyes of my students who come from low-income, low socio-economic backgrounds, broken homes, and environments that are often less than desirable. You won't see hopelessness or despair as much as you will see trust and enthusiasm and a true love of learning! I wish you could see them when we delve into a novel and they get all caught up in the story. It is truly a magical moment for me to observe! I wish you could hear them discuss plot, characters, themes, climax, and resolution! When I am witness to those magical moments, then I know why I became a teacher! Unfortunately, we are limited on resources and that is where YOU get an opportunity to step in and help us out!
I do everything in my power to bring good literature and fun learning experiences into my classroom. I stay late, get there early, work on weekends to make materials for my students, and above all, I love being their teacher. Unfortunately, I don't have the funds to buy the things we need to add even more dimension to our Reading Center like I would like to. We need a good quality listening center complete with headphones and audio books for students to listen to the stories we are covering in class. Many of them come from homes where books were not read to them and they crave this! They also crave having multiple experiences with books and the listening center would allow them to be able to read and HEAR a story being read fluently so that they can model their own reading appropriately. I try to rotate stations during reading instruction and good listening center would give me another high quality learning experience for my students to engage in during "rotation station time." We also desperately need some bean bags for our library corner so students can experience the joy of curling up with a good book in a comfortable environment during Sustained Silent Reading time. Don't you see that YOU have the power to make this happen for my kids? You can make a difference in their lives and in the lives of not just this year's students but in those yet to come into my classroom. Please take the time to reach out and help us out with this!
