Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

​I am the teacher of 19 amazing future workers that happen to have special needs. We are a program that prepares the student for employment. Our students come to our program to learn employability, transition, independence and work-related skills in order to attain and maintain employment. We are located in a local hospital.

Students in our program are eager to learn, become employable and successfully transition into the adult world.

They work alongside hospital staff and become a part of the different departments in the hospital. Our students work in departments such as Dietary & Nutrition, Ambulatory Services, Nursing, Laboratory, and Linens Department. Our students learn on the job training, appropriate social skills in the workplace, resume writing, interview skills, soft work skills, and skills needed to attain and maintain employment.

Our student's disabilities include autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, emotional disabilities and more but that doesn't define who they are and all that they have to offer the world of work!

My Project

Our program is located in a local hospital. Our students are at the hospital for half of their school day, making it their second classroom! The amazing staff, myself and job coach help provide the students with a balanced learning experience. Much of our instruction is performed in the work setting, which is the different departments within the hospital, but we also need space for instruction, activities, and accomplishments. We had been using various temporary areas, rooms, ​and drawers for instruction, activities, and storage, but we didn’t have a space of our own. We have recently been granted a room in the hospital. We are beyond thrilled and thankful for this opportunity. We now have a space of our own for instruction and storage.

The next step is to get the items needed to make this hospital meeting room into a classroom that will be used to develop the future workers of our community.

The hospital is kindly providing a nice business meeting table and professional chairs that can be used by the students. We are looking into purchasing a cabinet where we can keep student belongings, student documents and teaching supplies in a safe place. We are also looking for bulletin boards to put up student work, accomplishments, pictures, and much more. We are also requesting a few rolls of bulletin board paper for these boards. These supplies will make the student’s learning experience complete!
