Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I strive to create a home in my classroom for my students, all of whom are newcomers, recently immigrating from Guatemala, Honduras, and other Latin American countries. Almost all of my students arrived as unaccompanied minors fleeing insecurity stemming from extreme poverty and violence.

The most gratifying aspect of my job is personally connecting with my students and helping them tap into the resources to aid their transition.

If their basic needs are not met, how can we expect them to be prepared and motivated to learn? To that end, I spend a lot of time outside of class with my students (their lunchtime and afterschool).

I am requesting your support to set up a 'cafecito' station (coffee is a cultural norm and point of immense pride!) to host reflexion circles, planning meetings, even domino events and arts/crafting sessions with my students. I also plan on putting bundles of hygiene bundles together for my students who are in the most need. Lastly, I am requesting cleaning supplies and air filter refills (my classroom has a machine I will be able to put to use!) to maintain the best environment for my students.
