My Project

I'm a Special Education teacher and literacy coach supporting teachers and students in kindergarten, first, and second grade in an elementary school in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This school is a Title I school, and the majority of the students I support receive free breakfast and lunch.

The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.

Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.

Creating a comfortable classroom environment is critical for our students and helps achieve high levels of student engagement--and we all know that when students are actively engaged and invested in their learning, they make the most progress. I am requesting a classroom rug (and rug sweeper!) along with a few flexible seating options to allow students freedom and movement within the classroom. I am also requesting a lamp and string lights to soften the lighting in the classroom as the harsh overhead lighting can be overstimulating for some students. The stretchy toys are hands-on items for brain breaks after long periods of work, and the copy paper and charging cable are everyday necessities to keep the classroom running smoothly!
