My Project

Children with autism often experience sensory processing differences, which can affect how they perceive and respond to sensory input from their environment. These differences can impact their ability to learn and engage with the world around them. Providing sensory materials can help create a more inclusive learning environment by offering opportunities for exploration, self-regulation, and engagement.

Sensory materials can vary widely and may include items such as fidget toys, textured objects, visual aids, or items that provide auditory stimulation.

These materials can help children with autism in a number of areas.

Some children with autism may be hypersensitive or hyposensitive to sensory stimuli. Sensory materials can help them regulate their sensory experiences, either by providing calming input or by offering sensory stimulation that helps them focus.

Sensory materials can be used to improve attention and focus. For example, fidget toys can provide tactile stimulation that helps some children concentrate better.

Sensory materials can create opportunities for exploration and learning. Textured materials can help children explore different tactile sensations, which can be fun and educational.

Some sensory materials can help autistic children communicate their needs and interact with others more effectively.

For our students who need constant movement, the trampoline will allow them to stay in one place to learn. The canopy provides sensory breaks for overwhelmed students. For children learning to speak and read, the talking alphabet and flashcards are vital. With the keyboard, we can use music to learn the alphabet/motor skills. The magnetic and shape boards will help children struggling with writing and identifying numbers and shapes.

Overall, sensory materials can play a valuable role in supporting the learning and development of children with autism, helping them engage more fully in their environment and reach their full potential.
