Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are requesting a variety of books to add some high-interest and diverse titles to our classroom library. Students were surveyed to find out what genres of books they have found interesting in our genre studies and to give specific titles of series and/or individual books they would like to see added to our library. We would also like a large media shelf to house our chapter books as we have run out of room on the bookshelves we already have. We have a "living room" in our classroom with chairs, a loveseat and bean bag chairs. Our bean bag chairs have been well-loved and still are one of students' favorite places to plop down and enjoy a good book. They are in desperate need of refilling.

My goal is to continue to inspire students to step outside their comfort zones and experience a variety of genres.

I also want to keep their interest in independent reading high by adding titles that they have chosen to our library. This also gives them more ownership over their learning experiences, which makes them so much more meaningful.

My students are a special bunch who are inspired to extend their learning by the littlest things. For example, this year they have really taken a liking to our biography unit of study and have been begging to get new biographies to have available. They are not afraid to be vulnerable with each other and to challenge themselves and are learning how to persevere through those challenges. I am so very proud of them!
