Creating a HCL Student Costume Studio for The Lion King!

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

In our West Philadelphia neighborhood school, our K-8 students are extremely artistic and exuberant. Our classrooms are full of enthusiastic and talented performers, and we have decided to support them by developing one of the only full-time elementary theatre programs in the School District of Philadelphia.

Our students are performers, artists, singers, dancers, and charismatic speakers, and having a school musical gives them a chance to showcase their talents while learning to create in collaboration with a large ensemble.

This year, we are partnering with the Walnut Street Theatre and Disney Musicals in Schools to put on our second annual spring musical -- Disney's The Lion King KIDS!

My Project

For our school production of The Lion King KIDS, scheduled for May 7-8, we are hoping to have our students involved in every element of production, including costume design and creation. As one of the only elementary schools in Philadelphia with a full-time theatre program, we believe in the value of letting children feel ownership over their work, of exposing students to the many technical fields associated with theatrical production, and of allowing students to be involved in theatre even if they do not yet feel ready to be onstage.

With these supplies, students will be able to be involved in creating their own costumes, and students who are not acting in our play will be able to take part in our production in other ways.

The costumes and remaining supplies can then be the foundation of a school wardrobe closet for future performances, as well as for art and theatre classes.
