Creating a Flexible and Collaborative Classroom

My Students

As a teacher working in a Title I school (low-income/high poverty), in Corona, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their challenges, I am trying to keep my students engaged and trying to instill a love of learning, within them.

I work in an ICT setting, which consists of 60% general education students and 40% special education students, that truly benefit from all that is offered to them.

My students come from homes where they are not exposed to English and continue to try their best to learn.

My Project

All of the students in my classroom would benefit from having flexible seating options. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for how they learn. I have observed some students fidgeting around in the meeting area, at their seats, and during small group work time.

It has been observed that students are more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where they sit when they work.

I have selected products, such as, the Flex-Space Collaborative Floor Work Space, so students have different seating options and feel comfortable while working. Furthermore, it has been observed that incorporating flexible seating in the classroom provides many health benefits. The benefits include movement and comfort, management of sensory input, improved posture, better focus, and fewer misbehaviors. I have seen how the power of "choice" can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more! All in all, providing students with flexible seating options will allow me to create the best learning environment for each of the learners in my classroom.
