Creating a Digital Vision for Biology Students

My biology students would greatly benefit from an InFocus projector to incorporate technology into today's digital classroom. This will allow my science students to explore online labs, demonstrations, and videos.

We are teaching in an ever-changing world. Our students demand information, not in minutes, but in seconds. Technology influences everything we do; how we entertain, how we communicate, how we live our daily lives...but what about education? I am a 9th grade Biology teacher from a large urban fringe school district where for many of my students, due to the economy, have limited opportunities to reach into this digital world. Our school has a large percentage of students on free or reduced lunch and often, funds are short at home as well as in the classroom. I want to be able to give my students the world, but I only have the resources to give them a slice of it. This is where you come in! I believe that bringing technology into our classrooms is a vital part of helping our students, both academically and socially, and by allowing a window into this digital world, through an LCD projector, it would do just that.

I feel that we need to create opportunities for our students to reach into our digital future and start to make technology a vital part of our educational setting. We, as teachers, are no longer in an era in which books and rote memorization are how a student learns. Instead, our eyes have been opened to a variety of methods which ask us to engage our students in their own learning and have them create moments were that “spark” is lit and it makes them want to go out and tell the world what they have just learned. My students yearn for these opportunities and I want to give them these chances. In our district, the use of computer labs and technology is extremely limited, and to truly utilize them to their fullest extent to enrich the entire class, it takes funds and supplies that are beyond our means.

In order to light my students’ fire of interest and capture teachable moments with new technology, it needs to start here in my classroom with an LCD projector. With it, we will be able to tap into a variety of resources that otherwise could not be accessed by my entire class. To be able to interact with online labs, scientific articles, or even make their textbook come alive with videos, demonstrations or interactive resources, my students’ educational experience will compound with each and every use. I want my students to be able to graduate from school, able to carry with them the knowledge learned through new and innovative techniques that started with lessons and ideas brought forth with this projector.

With your help, my biology students will be able to embrace technology in our classroom and use it's advantages to strive for a better tomorrow. With the use of this projector in my classroom, I will be able to connect technology with my students to make real-world connections that would not normally come from just a textbook.
