My Students

Imagine mastering more than one language, and sometimes more than three or four. English Learners (ELs) always amaze me at what they can do in school.

These students are hard workers that have been through a lot in their lives already.

Many have fled countries that are at war or are no longer welcoming to their culture or heritage. They are trying their best to adjust to a new school system and way of life. It is often hard to make friends if you look, act, or speak differently. It is especially hard when your group of classmates change each school year. They might not be used to the way you talk or act.

My Project

Do you remember what it is like at the beginning of the school year? You are excited and a little nervous about meeting your new teacher and seeing which friends will be in your class.

English Language Learners are especially nervous to start the school year.

Their new classmates may not understand what they are saying or why they are doing something. This may lead to some very awkward experiences for this group of students.

Each classroom in our school will read a book that compares two characters to show that even though the two characters are different, they are the same. Next, the class will play a game that includes pictures of diverse students. Finally, the class will create all about me presentations to show that each student is unique.
