This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Currently, I teach Spanish Literacy without books. Since I have no books, I have no reason to need bookshelves. However, the school has begun the process to get my classroom books! But the school lacks the funds to purchase bookshelves and other materials for my library.

I teach in a high-need, Title I public school in Washington, DC.

My students are part of a dual language program in which they are required to master two languages: English and Spanish. My students learn Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Math in both languages. Since 90% of my students are English learners, the program is extremely well suited to my students’ needs.

My Project

I teach reading in Spanish without leveled books. Being that I do not have any Spanish leveled books, I do not have a class library or reading nook. Further, there is a lack of storage space- bookshelves in the classroom. However, recently I received the good news that my school is purchasing leveled books for my classroom. I am excited that my students next year will have their own class library! Unfortunately, the school doesn't have the resources to provide me with book storage units or other materials for my class library. My classroom is in desperate need of bookshelves and other book storage units. In order for a class library to be successful, it must be organized and easy to access. Books storage units will allow me to organize my new books by level and subject, and pillows will make the reading nook an inviting place to sit and read. With the pillows and book storage units, my entire library will not only be comfortable and cozy, but it will be a safe haven for my students.

All students deserve an inviting and safe place to think, read, and imagine.

My students specially need this because the majority of them come from unstable homes. These materials will allow me to create a class library that my students can count on to be able to relax and escape reality with the help of books.
