My Project

Getting students excited about reading is necessary now more than ever. Independent reading is essential to compensate for learning loss and closing literacy gaps. My students work hard during our class time, but having the chance to read books at home is important in further developing their skills. However, independent reading is only successful if students are excited about the books they are reading. In the past, the lack of relevant and diverse books has kept students from engaging in independent reading at the rate necessary to bridge gaps in literacy. As a result, many of our students are currently reading multiple years below grade level, and the amount of instruction time provided isn’t enough to catch them up. We need independent engagement with reading outside of the classroom. To make this happen, I am committed to updating my classroom library with new and relevant titles that the students themselves have asked for. Nothing should stand in the way of a student and a book they want to read. Help me improve literacy in Oakland by making independent reading something to look forward to!

This generation deserves to hear new voices and diverse stories as they grow up.

Updating my classroom library will bring access to new cohorts each year, giving them stories that they will remember for years to come.

I compiled a list of book requests that include options for all reading levels and a diverse range of genres, but with an emphasis on adventure and graphic novels. These are the genres that my students have requested. I am so grateful for the opportunity to provide this to Oakland youth, who are creative, brilliant, and patiently waiting for this classroom library update.
