Creating a Community Learning Space for Third Graders

My students need a classroom gathering place for morning meeting, enjoying a read-aloud novel or independent reading, and a comfy calm-down spot when they need a breather.

My Students

"Be silly, Be honest, Be kind." - Ralph Waldo Emerson This quote is framed at the front of our room to remind us to learn from each other as we work to become better readers, writers, and mathematicians.

We are a neighborhood public school in the city of Baltimore.

Class sizes range from 20-27 and our students come from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. We are a Title I school serving our community and we offer after-school enrichment programs in chess, drama, robotics, Girl Scouts, and book club. Our students have weekly instruction in music, gym, Spanish, and library and each spring we stage a school musical for which students audition and create set pieces and props. We are vibrant, but we struggle with funding, to say the least. Many of our students struggle with foundational skills in reading and work well below grade-level. Small group instruction is an integral part of our classroom day. As a teacher, I supply my classroom supplies such as classroom library books, student book boxes and poetry journals, bookshelves, and rugs. These materials create a warm and inviting classroom in which my students can become lifelong readers and learners.

My Project

I am requesting a durable and comfortable rug for our gathering place in our classroom library. We use this space for the whole class for morning meeting, reading our poem of the week, and sharing a read-aloud book in literacy instruction. We use the rug for small groups of students to work on classroom projects, engage in book club discussions, and work with math center activities such as math games and flash cards. Individually, students are drawn to the rug as a quiet spot to sit with a book during independent reading. Several students who are struggling with behavior and anger management issues use the area as a quiet and comfortable cool-down spot where they can take a breather and calm themselves. The rug is the hub of our classroom activity - sometimes it's nice to get away from a desk!

Many of the students who enter my classroom come from families who are struggling to make ends meet.

My classroom is a warm and inviting space where they feel cared for and respected. I work to give them their own space, belongings, and independence so that they may grow and learn. Each year I have purchased cheap rugs on my own. Inevitably, by December fidgety hands have pulled and snagged until threads come loose and the rug is a raggedy mess. I want my students to have a space they are proud of.
