My Students

The students I serve and accompany have come from many different parts of the world including Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and the United States. They come with tenacity, creativity, and a wide variety of experiences and gifts.

At our school, 96% of the students quality for free or reduced-price lunch, and 92% of the students are students of color.

As the only school counselor in the building, our students come with a diverse range of social and emotional needs. Often they are unable to participate in class because their home life is affecting their ability to be successful. My role then is to supply support for students. This includes working on academic improvement plans, social emotional support, creating a college and career focused culture.

My Project

I want to create a safe and welcoming space for students who need support academically, socially, emotionally and in college and career preparation. Having an area with a rug, some bean bags and tools to explore issues, like anger management and drama is important for students to see and know that my office is a safe place.

Creating an office space that is judgement free, open, and warm, is my ultimate goal.

I want to keep improving my practice, both in the physical space that I can create in my office, and also in the tools that I use. Having more workbooks and curriculum to implement in small groups, individual counseling, and classroom lessons will help build a comprehensive school counseling program that is beneficial to all students at my school.
