This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In today’s technology-driven world, students rely more on screens, making it difficult to engage in open, creative thinking. Writing has become something they associate with typing rather than brainstorming, drafting, and refining ideas. That’s why I want to create a Writing Lab—a dedicated, inviting space where students can step away from screens and rediscover the power of putting pen to paper. The room for this transformation is available, and I want to take full advantage of it.

This Writing Lab will function as a collaborative and flexible workspace designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and idea generation—giving students a space to develop their voices and refine their writing in an engaging and supportive environment.

It will also reflect the creative environments found in the business world, where innovation thrives in open, idea-driven spaces. Students will have access to open-concept brainstorming areas with large Post-it note pads, whiteboards, and writable walls, allowing them to visually map out ideas, share thoughts, and engage in discussions. Quiet zones will offer a peaceful space for independent work, while flexible seating will let them choose where they feel most comfortable writing. The space will encourage movement, collaboration, and creativity, ensuring students feel inspired to express their ideas freely.

My goal is to make writing an engaging, meaningful, and accessible experience. Students will explore various styles of writing, from storytelling to persuasive essays, in an environment that fosters creativity before introducing technology. Technology will be the final step—once students have brainstormed, drafted, and refined their ideas, they can use digital tools to bring their writing to completion. By prioritizing creative thinking before screens, I hope to reignite students’ excitement for writing and help them become confident, thoughtful writers.

Mrs. Velazquez will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by July 5.
