Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work for a Title I school where 100% of my students receive a free breakfast and free lunch. My students come from low-income families, poor neighborhoods, and difficult hardships. My students are English Language Learners who are eager, curious, and at times unsure of their ability. My school's focus is to make sure students are college ready and college bound. I want my students to have access to a calm classroom environment. Many are coming in with a million word gap, and underdeveloped fine and gross motor skills. My students need soft seats and bean bags in order to feel excited about school.

My Project

The key to creating an environment conducive to learning in a classroom is to not over-stimulate learners. Overstimulation is often caused by large amounts of bright colors, especially reds and oranges. My school is located in an area where children are exposed to trauma every day. They need a calm classroom to focus and reduce their stress.

In addition, I have observed many children who prefer to work while lying on their stomach, kneeling at a table, or sitting by a window.

By choices of different medium and neutral color, the physical space will allow the student to take ownership of the classroom.
