This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is essential for supporting the social-emotional development of my students, many of whom need targeted help to manage their emotions. Through Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), students will be taught appropriate coping skills, such as how to calm down, express emotions through art, and self-regulate in moments of frustration or anxiety. Students will be provided with a space where students can engage in sensory-rich, calming activities that promote self-regulation and emotional growth. My students will be taught to request the peace corner when they feel overstimulated and be provided with the art easel to draw the emotion they feel at the time. These SEL skills are essential for helping students recognize and manage their feelings, build stronger relationships, and make responsible decisions. The art easel, in particular, provides a tactile and sensory experience that is invaluable for students with autism as it allows them to process their emotions through creative expression.

Many of my students struggle with disruptive behaviors when faced with overwhelming situations, often due to sensory overload or difficulty in expressing their emotions.

These behaviors, such as withdrawing or acting out, can hinder their ability to focus and participate in the classroom. Incorporating a peace corner equipped with an art easel will offer them a constructive outlet for these feelings, allowing them to engage in hands-on, sensory activities that soothe and center them. This project will not only support students' emotional and sensory needs but also empower them to develop lifelong coping mechanisms, enhancing their ability to navigate the challenges they face both in and outside of the classroom.
