I teach Aviation Mechanics at my high school. Currently I teach 9th and 11th grade students in basic aircraft drawing. I would like my students to use what basic drafting skill they have and move them into the 21st century. This is possible with computer technology. To do this I would need to introduce a CAD (Computer Aided Design)curriculum with computers and a drawing software. This would help refine their drawing skills to be done at a more technical level. By achieving this higher level it would help them to get into a Aircraft Engineering design option in college as well be competitive in the Aviation Industry. The current trade drawing classroom is still teaching a curriculum that is from the 1940's. This will include making paper drawings with T- squares, triangles and pencils. My students always ask me why can't the school teach CAD or update the equipment. They want to use the computers more in the classroom and feel like professional draftsmen do in industry. What I would do to transition the trade drawing classroom into the 21st century is modernize it. This can be done with 40 HP laptop computers. Each student would have a laptop giving them mobility and saving space on their desks. I could go to the students desk or even have them come to my desk if there would be a reason to assist them. All 40 HP laptops would have a basic CAD software that would allow the student the ability to make modern drawings and print them on network enabled laser printers. This would make the student do the work on a college level. To learn drawing skills with the laptop computers, complex drawing would be produced on a college level. My curriculum is one that was made for a high school student, but may be given credit in college as an introductory class for Tech Drawing/Cad and give them the opportunity to use a laptop computer in a classroom setting. Once the curriculum is up to more modern standards, the students will be able to do work of aircraft designers and engineers that the Aviation industry needs desperately. If we have a new generation of ideas, it may mean newer and more fuel efficient airplanes. Once out of high school they can get jobs that pay very well. The aviation industry needs these draftsmen to help airlines, aircraft and engine manufacturers. They may also qualify for college credit towards a engineering degree after taking this class. The use of computer technology and a higher education as a background, newer designs we will be enable us to fly cheaper, farther and more faster than ever before. These students are our future and the future is now. Give me the opportunity to make the future happen with laptop computers.
