Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Ms. J! How do you spell...?" or "Ms. J! How do you say...?" Is what I hear all day during writing activities. During reading, all I hear are students struggling because they are 2-3 years behind and have little access to the resources needed to close this achievement gap.

My students are multicultural, vibrant and eager 4th graders who want the best for themselves and their communities.

The are great citizens who have the hopes and dreams to be one of the first in their families to go on to college and get great jobs. My students attend school in New York and are surrounded by images of poverty and the result of a lack of education. Yet they still have big dreams, they still envision a place where there is better, and with the right tools they are willing to go work hard and fight for those opportunities. The are eager to read and want to become better, however they need materials that will help them build their language and improve their writing skills.

My Project

The listening center materials will help my struggling students further develop their English language. My students who have arrived from foreign countries or who speak very little English will have hours of practice listening to great stories while building their language and comprehension. The dictionaries will be shared among students to build their vocabularies when they are reading independently and come to a word they don't know, or when they are writing and need to edit their work. These resources will bring hope to my struggling students and allow them to push themselves to do better.

This project is essential in helping to close the achievement gap in my classroom as well as in the classes that are to come.

The literacy rate in this country is low and evidence of this can be seen in my classroom as I have a range of 4th graders who cannot read, are a few years behind, or need materials to allow them to move beyond the grade level standards. My public school has very little money and my classes are crowded, these materials will help my students take control of their learning.
