My Students

My class is a group of hard-working and dedicated 4th graders at a STEM school in Boise, Idaho. This year my students have bounced around from a remote setting to hybrid learning, to full-time learning at school. They have shown incredible resilience as they persevered through so many changes and are thrilled to be all together at school. Whether we are virtual or in the building, my students favorite time of the day is our class read aloud. My students are fully engaged as they spend 15-20 minutes each day reading or listening to a grade-level book TOGETHER. They are building fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary as they enjoy an entertaining novel!

My Project

In fourth grade, achievement can be an uphill climb. My students stretch their brains each day as they persevere through challenges and master new learning. Our favorite time of the day is when we can unwind and come together as a group during our class read aloud. Fifteen minutes of pure engagement as students read/listen to our favorite novels.

Recently, I purchased the Harry Potter Book Series and began reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone during our read aloud each afternoon.

I was stunned by the positive response from students (and parents)! Students leave school predicting what will happen in the next chapter. They are going home retelling the stories and begging parents to buy the next book. My students are building fluency, comprehension and vocabulary all while having fun! This is an educators dream!

I want to build on this dream. I want my students to continue loving to read during summer break! I want to send my students off this summer on a reading adventure with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets!

I would like end the school year with a wizardly Hogwarts style party, and gift each student with their very own copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. In order to do this by our last week of school, I need to quickly raise enough funds to purchase the series and extra for party supplies.

My students have worked extra hard this year and deserve to have fabulous wizardry summer send off!
