My Students

On a daily basis, my students are inquisitive and active learners. For our end of the year goal, the students will be able to effectively use technology in school. The challenge is to help them uncover, to organize their findings, and to comprehend that bridges have social and economic implications.

My second grade students are in a Title One public school.

Students are from low-income families who are learning to become independent readers, writers, and thinkers. They are learning to collaboratively work in small group settings. For our social studies program, they learn about the social and economic affects of the real bridges in local communities, to sketch and to label parts of a real bridge so they can show evidence of what they discovered by creating 3d bridge models and writing informative pieces. We encourage them to ask their parents or grandparents to be involved with their education, such as to converse with their child on a daily basis, to visit local libraries, to read various materials such as books and newspaper articles to do their research, and to accompany the class on educational trips.

My Project

Students will work in small groups. They will access the Internet and search on kid friendly websites to gather photos, facts, and read about the social and economical affects on local communities from having a bridge built in your community. They will learn to record and filter out which facts would be interesting and relevant to share with their friends. After that, for an art project, each of them will select a real bridge to replicate with boxes and glue. They will use the iPads to help them stay engage in various tasks and activities and to learn how to organize their findings. The students will use the gathered data to help write an informative paragraph. During class discussions, they can share their accomplishments and/or failures by showing a video or photos of their tasks as they are seeking information, to take photos of their learning process, and/or to create a slide show to let others see the progression of their final project.

The donations of some iPads would benefit my students' ability to be independent learners and thinkers in school and at home.

The majority of the students cannot afford to have a computer with Internet access at home. Students can continue to focus on their tasks at home. At school, each child can have more opportunities to access more resources in order to get a better perspective on various views of the positive and negative affects on the local communities when bridges were built.
