Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach four classes of 7th grade life science, totaling about 80 students. My students are drawn from a high-need community in Connecticut. Despite many challenges in their lives, they are talented, excited, and engaged in science. They want a challenge, and I am constantly looking for ways to provide one!

My students learn best when they can experience science first-hand. Creating meaningful experiences for them in the classroom means planning projects that let them interact with the concepts we are studying. Despite significant gaps in their literacy and math skills, my students are intelligent and dedicated, and deserving of challenging and engaging projects.

For this project, I am requesting the supplies for students to create their own functional, miniature ecosystem using 2 liter bottles. The kits contain soil, seeds, fertilizer, snails, and aquatic plants. This project will help students experience the interactions between plants, animals, and their environment. Students will be expected to create and write about food webs and relationships between producers, consumers, and decomposers. In addition, students will also be asked to write proposals and investigate the effect of changing one aspect of their mini-ecosystem. Students will report their results in a lab report and presentation to their classmates.

Your support of this project will help create a memorable learning experience for my students, and allow them to learn environmental science first-hand. This project will definitely captivate even the most reluctant of my ecologists!
