My Students

Bring back creativity and art to our classroom! Now that we've suffered major cuts to our school supplies, these kindergarteners need high-quality art supplies to engage themselves in a world of exploration, discovery, and imagination.

My school is located in a working-class, inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income households.

Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs and struggle to meet the everyday needs of their children, such as providing regular meals or a consistent bedtime. Many struggle simply to help their children with completing daily homework assignments. A majority of my students do not have regular access to art or art supplies, and this project will help to broaden the scope of what they can create from their own imaginations.

My Project

Common Core standards are being rolled out this year, and I want my students to have as many opportunities as they can to create and describe their works of art with their peers. With these crayons, clay, and pads, they will be able to respond to works of literature and engage in discussions with their classmates about their works of art, specifically in asking and answering questions. Being able to create their own works will be a huge motivation for even the quietest student to talk, share ideas, and discuss details, all of which are a big part of the new Common Core standards.

Particularly with younger students, having something that you can create with your own hands is monumental in the learning process.

With painting paper, watercolor crayons, and modeling clay, they will be able to paint and create their own projects that they can take pride in, which will hopefully translate into increased achievement of the standards.
