My students are amazing, but while they are amazing, they challenge me every day. I teach a mixture of eighth and ninth-grade students who come with their challenges of learning to balance their school, family, and social lives. I love talking with them and hearing about their interests in anime, sports, and the classic middle school drama. Another part of my challenge is with them is breaking down the mental wall of thinking because they have never been good at math, they will automatically fail my class. So many students are afraid of math and they automatically shut down as they walk into a classroom. My goal as a teacher is to break down the stigma around mathematics and create an environment that fosters positive learning.
My students need better materials to improve their learning inside and outside of my room.
Some ways I can improve their learning in the classroom are by having small reinforcers and better decor. It may seem small, but if students are excited and feel comfortable in my room, more learning will happen. I would also love to have more materials, such as compasses, that are available to students to check out for home use.
My Project
One of the ways that my students feel behind is with compasses. All compasses are different, and all compasses require practice to understand how they work. For my students, I encourage them to purchase their own compass at the beginning of the year, as they are a huge part of the eighth and ninth-grade curriculum, but I cannot afford to lend all of my students a compass every school year. I have my own class set, but if their homework requires a compass, how are they supposed to practice their skills at home? The answer is they don’t, and then they start to fall behind. Therefore, the vicious cycle of fear and mathematics starts again.
Another way I would want to implement a better environment in my class is by having small, positive reinforcers in my room.
Many studies have shown that peppermint improves focus in intellectual settings. I would love to have mints in my room so students can have them on days where it is a big topic or on test days to help with their memory and limit distractions.
