Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

School libraries are for many students their first experience with browsing and being in contact with many books. For many years, our school library has been limited to a closet in a corner on the first floor of our school building. Lack of windows, ventilation, and appropriate seating made this space unsuitable to welcome students back after the Covid-19 pandemic. With that, the titles we had in that space were, for the most part, outdated. Due to ventilation issues, that space we called library for many years is now inaccessible to our student body due to the Covid restrictions.

These restrictions, however, gave us the opportunity to rethink our library.

Our school found an opportunity to repurpose a space and turn it into our school library. In order to embark on a project of such magnitude, we will need print materials such as magazines, culturally responsive books, and books in Spanish.

Our mission is to serve all levels and ages of our community's children in learning a rigorous, broad, and engaging course of study, creating students who are respectful, responsible, reflective, and ready to lead. Our academic programs serve students from general education to special education, those who are gifted and talented and are in our Spanish dual immersion program. With such a diverse community it is a priority to build our school library that relates to all cultures, backgrounds and identities.

We hope to create a library full of enriching materials in an environment where students look forward to coming and diving into new books.
