Help me give my students a great novel about my favorite Spider Man, Miles Morales. They will be reading this during Acceleration Academy in February. They will create their own heroes and hopefully draw a few comics.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are in desperate need of equal opportunities. A majority of my students are from low-income homes, and all receive free breakfast and lunch. Most students are first and second generation immigrants whose primary language is Spanish. Due to their economic status, my students face many challenges including lack of basic classroom materials. Unfortunately for them, this means my students are at a disadvantage compared to students in affluent communities who have plentiful access to basic supplies such as binders to organize and take responsibility for their work. Students in my class will one day be competing for spots in private high schools, colleges and eventually, jobs against students who have many resources. Our school can only provide so much when it comes to school supplies. My hope is by providing much needed books and basic supplies to students they will become more independent. My students deserve an equal playing field and an equitable school experience.
My Project
Children struggle finding their place in society. It is even more difficult for my English Learning students to assimilate into society and fit in with their peers. Exposing children to literature with culturally diverse characters is a way to make children feel connected to others like them and also gives them someone they can look to as a role model. The popular superheroes we see today have little connection with children of color. I have chosen Miles Morale: Spider-Man as the book of the week. By day Miles Morales is your average Puerto Rican/African American boy who must deal with his family, school, friends, and fighting crime. Reading this novel will help my students make a connection to a popular character.
During Acceleration Academy in February 2022, we will be working on creating a hero.
Students will also read some excerpt from former President Barack Obama's speech, Malala Yousafzai, and "The Hero with a Thousand Faces", by Joseph Campbell. The goal is for them to create a superhero that is like them. Write a backstory, and hopefully draw some sketches, or even their own comic strip. This class will also help prepare them for the MCAS, by making comparison with different forms of literature.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
