Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing and kind-hearted individuals of all ages. I work in a special day classroom that modifies instruction to meet the individual needs of those with the most severe academic challenges. My students have disabilities ranging from Autism, intellectual disabilities, and orthopedic impairments, and work hard to conquer new challenges and activities every single day.

My Project

These materials will make a difference for students in a special education setting because they have lots of sensory needs and require constant access to breaks. When the students become overwhelmed by work demands within the classroom, they will have this space as an acceptable place to go to to take a break. They can do this instead of engaging in negative behaviors to escape the work tasks. The sensory materials will be placed in the calming corner to incorporate calming strategies and help the students better regulate their emotions and return to work a lot calmer. Because school has been out for so long due to COVID-19, some students will need a safe space to go to upon the return to the classroom as they adjust to being back in a structured academic setting.
