My Students

I teach at an inner city public school. My students don't have many resources, and our school does a great job of providing the necessities but not always what we wish. I am always in search of a novel that my students can connect with and fall in love with. One Crazy Summer is one such novel.

The majority of my students are from an inner city housing project, and they don't have many resources.

The public school they attend is often a retreat and safe haven where they are encouraged to set goals, explore and experience new things. Despite their obstacles, they are quite delightful sixth graders. They love school and seldom miss days. They also love to be read to and enjoy nothing more than a good story. Reading is an integral part of their success not only in English, but also in other core subjects. Therefore, I am always in search of something that they will read with interest and fidelity.

My Project

I had one crazy summer reading One Crazy Summer. I spent my summer reading books that I thought my students would enjoy. I fell in love with this novel, and I know my students will too. The characters reminded me so much of my students. I know they will have no problem making self to text connections. There is no greater feeling than having your students ask when it is time to read so that they can get back to a world in a novel that makes them smile and laugh. This is that novel! it is full of adventure, responsibility, love, relationships, trust, crushes and humor. What more could a twelve year old ask for? I CAN"T WAIT TO INTRODUCE THIS BOOK!

I know that my students will enjoy reading this book because the characters are so familiar to them.

The themes are relevant to their lives, yet the adventures of the characters will give them insight into new experiences and take them on a journey. Meanwhile, I will be able to teach higher level thinking skills and reading comprehension strategies that they can use for the rest of their lives. As always a WIN/ WIN opportunity.
