Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am teaching Kindergarten and 1st Grade ENL/ESL to 51 students of varying language backgrounds and English language skills. This year, I would like for them to have the chance to use technology to develop their English language proficiency.

I teach in a public elementary school in which nearly 1/2 of the student population is receiving either special education or English language support services.

More than 75% of students in this school receive free or reduced-price lunch. In spite of these factors, I teach students who genuinely want to learn. They demonstrate excellent attendance and a willingness to participate in activities and have new experiences.

My Project

This year, the entire school (grades K-5) is using a literacy curriculum called "Wonders." The program features many lessons and short videos online. By having access to a Chromebook, students could choose to watch the videos teaching phonics, sound segmentation, and grammar. They could also use the technology to learn more about the world beyond their small community. In particular, many of the students I service this year have speech and language impairments. They have difficulty processing language. Right now, I am using my hand as a puppet to teach students sound segmentation and blending. Utilizing technology would allow them to interact with the content in a different way. Rather than listening to my voice repeatedly, they could listen to videos teaching the same lessons. They would become more in control of their own learning.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom by offering to students new opportunities for learning.

English language learners benefit immensely from visual support, and I would like to expose them to videos related to our weekly learning topics that would encourage them to have discussions and ask questions. Their learning needs to be more engaging than just words on a page - I want my students to be crazy for Chromebooks!
