Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Do you remember playing classic board games, such as Candy Land, Connect Four or Sorry? Well, my first grade students don't! Most of them have never heard of these games.

Unfortunately, today's generation of first grades have never been introduced to these wonderful game boards. Most of the first grade students in my classroom do not have any game boards at home because their parents cannot afford to buy them. This past school year, I rediscovered the importance of having these kinds of board games in the classroom. It happened on a rainy day when my students were forced to play indoors. I brought out a couple of old boxes of Candy Land and Connect Four. I realized that most students didn't know how to play these games. Once I taught them how to play, I was amazed to see the various skills that these games were allowing my students to practice. My first grade students were sharing, taking turns, concentrating, thinking strategically, working collaboratively with partners and getting ample opportunities to speak and share out. It was great to hear the conversations that were encouraged by these board games. I soon realized how wonderful it would be to have a class set of all the classic game boards in my classroom for many more students to enjoy.

I would like to have three different sets of various board games that students in my classroom can use on rainy days, during independent work time, and during free time. These games will allow first grades to learn many social skills that most first graders today are lacking, such as sharing, taking turns, communicating with one another and working in cooperative groups.

I strongly believe that these board games will make a positive impact on my first grade students. These games will last for many years to come and many generations of students will benefit from them.
