My Students

As a title 1 school my students face many difficulties in and out of the classroom; such as where the food will come from when we are on spring break. Many of them have experienced such hardships in their lives. Coming to school allows for them to escape into a world of success. The structure that is provided in my classroom enables both the flow of creativity & meaningful experiences with the comfort of safety and security. Creating design challenges for my students provides the structure to gain success by attaining an end goal.

My Project

Currently, students have been studying applied science through various mini labs focused on simple machines.Their culminating task is to build a Crazy Contraption, also known as a Rube Goldberg experiment. Rube Goldberg is a complex compound machine focused on a simple end task. The students will get to choose what the end task is they want to do. The choices they will get to select from are popping a balloon, zipping up a zipper, turning a page in a book, ringing a bell, turning a light switch on, or pouring milk into a bowl of cereal. Here the students will gain knowledge on the ability to build, test, and evaluate a model of a design problem. First the students will be introduced to a variety of Rube Goldberg projects that will inspire and excite them.As a team, they will then sketch out their initial model that will include a series of simple machines focused on an end task. After students have passed their safety test, they will begin construction. Through this building the students will face many obstacles. This project can be a grueling process where teamwork is put to the test. They will learn about the design process because most likely they will not be able to hit their end task right away. In the design process the students will go back to their initial sketch and redesign it. Then they will have to go through their upgrade of their model based off of their second sketch.
