Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of spending the day with a group of the most sincere and persevering 9th-12th graders. My special education classes provide these hard working young adults with a variety of vocational and daily living skill activities. My students and I have created a number of fun ways to learn these essential skills.

Throughout the day they are cooking, selling breakfast treats from a cafe cart, recycling, photographing events, and caring for a network of fish tanks.

Each of these projects was created based on individual interests and talents. They provide opportunities to learn communication skills, functional skills, and academic skills. Most importantly, it provides opportunities to be vital and contributing members on a very big campus.

My Project

On a daily basis, my vocational students push a cart through the hallways, selling juice, water, coffee and bagels. They are learning various small business skills, such as prepping food, making sales, exchanging money, cleaning up and counting profits. Even with all these responsibilities to choose from, there are a handful of students who aren't interested in working with the cart...my project will change all that!

In looking for a fun and motivating way to further engage some of the "hard to reach students," I'd like to motorize the cafe cart business!!

Some kids consider the current cart too heavy, and don't want to push it, but with a motor doing all the hard work, they'll be able to transport beverages around campus quite easily. There are other students who have a special interest in motors, what better way to get them more involved than to have them work and maintain a motorized cooler?

A remote control cooler will be highly motivating and everyone will want to be a part of the cafe business. It will add new skills (operating a motor, practicing rules of the road/hallways, and reading a remote control) to work on during the school day. This addition will not only be a hit for the vocational students, everyone in the school will be a part of the fun!
