This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Working in a public Montessori school can seem to other educators and parents of students as overwhelmingly difficult. Well... they are correct in terms of preparing the content, materials, and the learning environment. It is a wonderful misery of planning and implementation that can suddenly change according to each student's needs. Within this classroom, we explore mathematics and science for the three grade levels of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

These students teach, support, and build each other up from 4th to 6th, all in one room.

Students spend three years with me and continue to build better academics and social skills. Having this opportunity gives me the ability to really know who each student really is. Students embody the three Montessori tenants of respect others, respect yourself, and respect the environment.

My Project

This may sound crazy but, this mini-figure game is loaded with math and critical thinking. Do not think we are going to stop everything to play a game at school, far from it. I grew up playing mini-figures games, and it helped build my own high-level thinking skills because you have to not only build your teams but also anticipate what your opponents will be doing.

Think chess, but "souped up", as in super heroes and villains battling for your students' math and critical thinking skills.

I tested this idea with my own children at home, ages 7 to 10, and they fell in love. Soon they were voluntarily calculating and building their team points, abilities use, and strategizing how the next game would go for their team.

The way it works is two students would build their own team using only 300 points. Each character they choose is worth a set amount of points along with special abilities. Note: Each character has its own information card with listed abilities that students must read to recall what they can do during the game. This also builds reading and fluency skills while playing the game. Once the teams are built, the students face off on a cool artistically enhanced play mat. All the while, learning and coming up with unique strategies to overcome.

The way this tool will be used within my classroom specifically would be to create an extension within my classroom that would create a buzz of interest. Then, as interest builds, create an after-school group that meets once a week to learn and play. All to say, encouraging and enhancing the use of math, reading, and critical decision-making skills in and around our classroom.
