Mmm, homemade cooking. Smelling freshly baked cookies, listening to bubbling sauce, kneading dough for bread, witnessing the blended ingredients transform into a finished product. Our wonderful class for students with special needs is a kindergarten, first, and second grade class for 5-8 year old children and we are crazy about cooking! Comprised of 12 students with special needs including speech impairment, language processing, learning disabilities, autism, emotional disturbance, etc., we are the only 5-8 year old self contained class in our warm public elementary school. Located in the Alphabet City neighborhood in Manhattan, our school's philosophy and practice is that children learn best through hands on activities and discovery. What is more hands on than cooking?! Students with special needs especially benefit from tactile and concrete experiences.

But, alas, tactile experiences require an abundance of supplies! Cooking is a memorable and wide reaching learning experience. Using all of our senses, cooking incorporates reading, math, science, health, social skills as well as building pride and confidence. We are in grave need of cooking supplies to provide meaningful and delicious experiences!

Our "kitchen" is bare; we need to have it remodeled! All the basic cooking supplies are needed such as mixing bowls and spoons, measuring cups, baking pans, pots, burners, etc. And we would emphatically appreciate a some less conventional pieces for exotic and different modes of cooking such as a blender and a griddle. Cooking is fun,exciting, and adventurous at this young age of discovery whether baking a pie, flipping pancakes, or making smoothies. No one even notices that we read a recipe, measure the ingredients, and observe chemical reactions!

With your generous donation, you will be providing children the opportunity to experiment with new foods and enjoy healthy dishes. Cooking in class, making tasty treats, these are the experiences that children will fondly remember for the rest of their lives. I can guarantee that your gift will deliver frequent ear to ear grins from the students in our class this year and in the years to come.
