This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach special education in a low-income rural community in North Carolina. My kids have mild to moderate disabilities and are in a program called Occupational Course of Studies where they focus on getting real-world job training and take classes that a "real-world" approach to the core subjects.
I teach three different levels of math in this program, and very few of my kids even know how to correctly use a calculator. My school provided 5 for 30 students.
Having basic four function calculators will help my students with learning to balance checkbooks, calculating salaries, learning to do their taxes, planning budgets, and many many other daily-life math skills that I teach in my classroom.
So many of my children struggle with math and I hope to use these calculators as an aid to help them master the math skills they need to succeed in the working world.
