My Students

I'm a speech therapist at a Title I elementary school in NYC. I have trouble getting my students to write. They don't like to write about their experiences or even write answers to questions. They will complete their assignments but it's sometimes rough going. Right now we only have old broken, crayons, markers and pencils. My pencil sharpener is one that is mounted onto the wall. The majority of my students can't reach it and the ones who can, don't know how to use it.

My students aren't used to having new things to use at home or at school.

The students I work with receive multiple special educational services. Despite the many challenges my students face in school and at home, they genuinely want to learn but they don't always have the tools to complete their work. They want to feel good about the things they write about and they want to have pictures to accompany their work.

My Project

My students have difficulty expressing themselves verbally and through writing. They don't always have the language they need to say how they are feeling, what they are thinking or explain what is going on in their world.

My students need a creative outlet.

Having these new art and writing supplies will encourage them to express themselves without having to find so may words to use. Their frustration will decrease and the joy of doing something well and feeling proud of the work they produce will increase. It's a simple yet creative way to get my speech students to work towards their full potential.
