Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are creative, hard-working, and dedicated learners who come from diverse backgrounds. Our school includes a large number of ESL students as well as students with learning disabilities and behavioral and emotional disorders. We welcome everyone with open arms and are a safe haven for students who have not succeeded at more traditional high schools in the city.

My students are wonderful, resilient people.

The pandemic introduced a wide variety of new challenges; they have dealt with illness at home, their parents' job losses and struggles, and a year and a half of online learning (many lacking the technology that they needed to be academically successful). Despite everything that they have faced, they have done their best to work hard in school. This year we are back in-person, and they are excited to be back, surrounded by their peers and teachers in the welcoming school environment that my high school has created.

My students are still dealing with the effects of the pandemic, specifically socially and emotionally. Many of them are having a hard time readjusting. I want to start a Crochet Club at my school because I believe crocheting has many benefits. It helps reduce stress and anxiety, and it builds self esteem. Crochet Club will be a safe space for students to complete fun, hands-on projects and participate in a social activity with their peers. They will choose what they want to make, but we will also have a focus on community service. Together, we will research places to donate some of the projects that students create. This will be a community-building organization where we will gather once a week after school and work together to create things. I have already prepared a curriculum, I just need some materials to help us get started.
