Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Approximately 300 Pre-K through 5th-grade students come through our after-school program each year. These students come from some of the poorest families in an already 100% free/reduced lunch school district, and nearly all struggle academically. Our Afterschool Program relies on test data and certified teachers to support each student's specific learning and social needs while also providing a safe place for the students to learn and grow after the regular school day ends.

Arts & Crafts are an important part of our STEM & Literacy curriculum.

Due to budget cuts, it is a struggle to purchase some of the more expensive craft supplies. One of the students' favorites, paint, is just too much for us to afford. For that reason, we've included some assorted colors of acrylic paint and paintbrushes on this project, as well as cotton swabs that they can also use as paintbrushes. There's also watercolor paint, brushes, and watercolor paper for them to use as well. To add a little more creativity, we've also included a variety of craft balls (pompoms) and sequins for the students to use for arts and science projects. Our most expensive items are pencil sharpeners (and pencils). We have included 12 regular sharpeners for the students to share in the classrooms, and one heavy-duty sharpener that will be used by the teachers/director to sharpen the colored pencils that we already have. We're also requesting Kleenex, baby wipes, and Clorox wipes to clean up their creative messes!

The students will use each of these craft supplies for various art projects to help them explore their science, math, and literacy lessons while enhancing their creativity and social skills.
